SUMMARY:November General Meeting - Bringing Birds Home
DESCRIPTION:General Meeting at Ward 6 City Council Office 3202 E 1st St\, Tucson and via Zoom. \nDetails on JoinIT. \n“Bringing Birds Home: Planting with Purpose” \nYour yard can be more than a beautiful space—it can be a home for birds! Discover how thoughtful planting with native plants can provide the food and shelter birds need\, and learn simple ways to add water\, create nesting opportunities\, and reduce common urban hazards. Whether you’re starting from scratch or building on an existing garden\, you’ll leave with practical ideas for creating a space where birds can thrive. \nSpeaker: Kim Matsushino from Tucson Bird Alliance \nKimberly is the Habitat at Home Program Manager at Tucson Bird Alliance\, with more than 10 years of experience protecting birds by creating and enhancing habitat in urban areas. A native Tucsonan and graduate of the University of Arizona\, Kim grew up exploring and appreciating southern Arizona’s unique wildlands and biodiversity. After earning a degree in Conservation Biology from the School of Natural Resources and the Environment\, she began her conservation career with Saguaro National Park and Western National Parks Association before joining Tucson Bird Alliance in 2015. Today\, Kim works with homeowners and communities to create spaces where both people and wildlife can thrive. She also developed Habitat on Wheels\, a mobile outreach program that brings free native plants and habitat resources to communities in southeast Arizona most impacted by urban heat. \n

SUMMARY:December General Meeting - Arboriculture
DESCRIPTION:General Meeting at Ward 6 City Council Office 3202 E 1st St\, Tucson and via Zoom. \nDetails on JoinIT. \n“Arboriculture” \nArboriculture is the practice of caring for trees\, and pruning is one of its most important skills. A good cut helps a tree grow strong for decades. A bad one can cause damage that lasts just as long. Jonah Ivy of Transforming Terrain\, a Tucson land stewardship business\, shares how to prune with a tree’s long-term health in mind. He’ll show examples of good and bad pruning\, explain structural pruning for young trees\, and cover the best timing for pruning in the Sonoran Desert. You’ll leave ready to care for your own trees with confidence. \nSpeaker: Jonah Ivy from Transforming Terrain \nTransforming Terrain specializes in regionally adapted sustainable land stewardship. This includes plant care for native trees and other plants\, rainwater harvesting\, flood and erosion control\, and plant identification. We believe healing our land is the best way to heal our community\, which is why we prioritize education along side our installations and maintenance. \n
