SUMMARY OF TOG BOARD DUTIES

Next year Tucson Organic Gardeners will celebrate 50 years. We bring a message of hope and friendship to all who join. You are being invited to help continue this message of sustainable gardening to our community.

All Board members serve a two-year term, attend Board meetings monthly to provide updates and information, contribute ideas and help plan the next year’s topics and speakers for meetings.

Title: President

Responsibilities: Arrange for the meeting place of both the general meeting and the board meetings. Negotiate with St Marks for the use of the parking lot for the biannual fairs. Conduct general meetings and the board meetings. Stay in contact with the presenters to assure their participation. Write a monthly message for the members, which will be published on the website. Other smaller details include arranging advertising for the fairs and dealing with any mini crisis issues that may arise.

Qualifications: Attention to detail. Computer skills are helpful.

Time Commitment: 12 – 16 hours monthly. This includes about 4 hours for board meetings and monthly meetings.

Title:  Secretary

Responsibilities: Maintain written records of board meetings. Serve as official TOG correspondent and maintain TOG records.

Qualifications: The position requires strong writing, organization and record keeping skills. Computer skills are most helpful.

Time Commitment: This position requires approximately 4 – 8 hours per month to effectively handle the responsibilities of the position.

Title:  Web Point-Of-Contact (POC)

Responsibilities: Serve as TOG POC with web services company.

Qualifications: The position requires strong computer skills and attention to detail.

Time Commitment: This position requires approximately 4 – 8 hours per month to effectively handle the responsibilities of the position.

Title: Education Chair

Responsibilities: The Education and Outreach Director is charged with promoting Organic Gardening Methods in a number of ways. The original idea was to have classroom programs and lessons. Today that is somewhat difficult because of rules and regulations requiring fingerprinting, etc.  We have had tables at a number of events in Tucson and promoted organic methods, composting, native plants, and helping pollinators with flowers that they need to survive. We look for information that might be useful to our members and provide that to the “Composter” and our new website. We also look at projects that might be proposed for a Grant from our organization.

Qualifications: Eagerness and enthusiasm.

Title: Treasurer

Responsibilities: A monthly report is made that shows bank activity. Members get reimbursement checks for their out-of-pockets spending.

Our business with the post office box and internet expenses are paid by the treasurer. A two-year report is given to two board members as per the bylaws. A yearly payment of $10 is made to the Arizona Corporation Commission.

I will remain on the board to help the treasurer.

Qualifications: If you can add four plus five, you are over qualified. The board members work as a team and are there to help with the tasks.

Time Commitment:

Title: Volunteer Coordinator

Qualifications: A friendly smile.

Responsibilities: The main duty is to sign up volunteers for any community events we participate in. Some of these include the Spring and Fall TOG Plant Sales, the Sustainable Tucson Fair and the Peace Fair. Soliciting blog articles (or writing some) is also encouraged.

Time Commitment: This varies according to the time of year. On average it is maybe 1 hour monthly, plus the time spent at Board meetings.

Title: Membership Chair

Qualifications: Be the host(ess) with the mostest!

Responsibilities: Greet TOG folks at meetings, wrangle name tags, recruit new members, help with the annual membership renewal, and maintain membership records. It’s a great way to get to know our members better and share TOG information with potential members.

Time Commitment: On average one to two hours/month.
